A lot has been made recently in the press about the threat of Tesla and Chinese-made electric cars for traditional European, American and Japanese Automakers. The graphic above shows an analysis of H1 2023 global electric vehicle sales by the research firm Canalys. A few interesting call-outs:

  • China is leading the pack with 31% of all new-car sales being electric. Europe is approaching 20% and North America just crossed 10%. ROW markets are still lagging at 5% or lower.

  • Tesla is the undisputed EV sales leader in the US, with almost half of all-electric cars sold being Tesla models. Tesla also leads in Europe, but not by as much.

  • Meanwhile, BYD is extremely strong in China and other developing markets like Africa and Southeast Asia.

  • Official Tesla Telematics API 🧑‍💻: To support fleet management and third-party apps, Tesla has now released official APIs. The interfaces can be used to retrieve data from Tesla vehicles (e.g. battery state of charge, mileage, charging history, and ongoing charging sessions), but also send commands to a vehicle (e.g. start/stop charging, set air condition, and (un-)lock the car). The vehicle owner must grant access to the respective third-party app. Likely, those endpoints have been professionalized for the Tesla-Hertz collaboration (we reported) and are an abstract of the APIs used by Tesla’s own mobile app.

  • VW delays bidirectional charging 🔄: At its March 2021 “Volkswagen Power Day”, VW promised to deliver DC vehicle-2-grid (V2G) by the end of 2022. VW envisioned the vehicles to serve as mobile power banks to optimize the use of renewable energy. As of today - 2023, we have yet to see any official bidirectional chargers compatible with VW Group vehicles. And we might not see them for quite a while, according to the new CEO of Elli - Giovanni Palazzo. During his keynote at the Hubject conference in Berlin, he stated that we won’t see VW’s bidirectional charging until 2025 at the earliest. Interestingly, he also mentioned an ongoing VW-internal discussion about AC bidirectional charging to bring costs down for buyers.

  • 15% utilization to operate a profitable fast-charging network? 📈: Shortly after our recent guest article on charging network profitability, McKinsey published an article about public fast charging station operators’ levers to become profitable. Besides leveraging utilization advantages (→ locations!), competitive pricing could drive the greatest gain to break even. The article includes a mini business case in which US public fast charging station economics without subsidies or credits are illustrated. In conclusion, a target corridor of 15-20% utilization is required to break even.
