P3 Asia Charging Index

P3 Asia charging index (P3CI) was recently published. The report compares available electric vehicle’s recharging capabilities. For a P3CI of 1.0 the EV needs to recharge 300 km within 20 minutes (starting with 10% SoC). The advantage of the index is that it considers both, the average charging power and the driving efficiency.

Lotus Emeya with new charging record 🥇

  • After 10 minutes: 310 WLTP kilometers

  • After 20 minutes: 459 km

  • P3 Charging Index Value of 1,53

Look at this charging curve 😍

  • 102 kWh battery

  • Peak charging power of 402 kW

  • Average charging power of 331 kW

  • It is worth noting that the Emeya reached 80% SoC after 14 minutes, after which the amount of charging power the car can handle dropped dramatically. This results in 6 minutes of relatively low charging power.

Key Takeaways from the Report 💭:

  • Premium Plugs for Premium Cars🔌: Charging peaks of those cars require charging infrastructure that can provide this much power → charging infrastructure can become the bottleneck for drivers of those cars and those will be paying to pay premium

  • Manufacturers need to break with norms to innovate 📄: The CCS maximum amperage of 500 is a thing of the past. In addition to Tesla, other automakers (Lotus) and charging hardware manufacturers (XCharge, ABB) are offering solutions that provide more amperage than originally specified in CCS.

  • The methodology needs an update 📐: P3 has already suggested that the methodology needs to be adapted as cars start to reach 80% within 20 minutes. In addition, we would like to point out that WLTP does not accurately reflect the "real world" fuel efficiency of EVs.

  • Compare apple 🍎 and bananas 🍌: There is one asian car and its “charging technology” missing. Nio provides battery swapping that allows drivers to “recharge” a Nio in 5 minutes.

  • IONITY updates pricing 🥵: The public charging tariff jungle is growing. The good news is that public charging at IONITY for frequent travelers got a lot cheaper. The big CPOs (for example EnBW, Tesla, and IONITY in Germany) have started to compete on pricing for loyal customers by launching their subscription service which grants lower charging prices for a monthly fee.

  • Vandalism on Chargers 🛠️: Cut-off cables, graffiti, smashed screen … CPOs face vandalism as most chargers are unattended. Recently, Electrify America started to include vandalism within its network status updates. In its current update, it looks like Washington is a hot spot with four locations affected by vandalism.

  • Ownership obliges ⛽️💙🔌: The German government has decided that from 1 January 2028, petrol stations will be obliged to offer fast-charging stations. Unfortunately, the change in the law comes with a lot of exemptions and is quite late. Therefore, we believe that the initial target will be met anyway, as major petrol station operators such as Shell, BP (Aral Pulse) and others have even more ambitious roll-out plans as they see a valid business opportunity as CPO.

Most-clicked link last week: Was the link to Engie’s Q1 report that revealed that the company is looking for a buyer for its investment in Dutch charger manufactuer EV-Box. (Link to Engie’s report, last week’s article)
