Personal Update

Hey, Janek and Julius here.

It’s been over 1.5 years now since we started sending Electric Avenue weekly.

As some of you know this newsletter is just a fun side project of ours. We’ve both had day jobs/careers working for various companies in the EV & Charging industry for over 7 years.

So as you can imagine we were excited when our friend Laolu from Leke Services sent us his Microsoft Copilot chat history the other day:

Crazy to see Electric Avenue as the highest-cited source for this search - ahead of McKinsey.com and Chargepoint’s Investor Relations website!

Big credit of course goes to Ole from Incremental.no who wrote this particular guest post in⚡ What does it take for a Charge Point Operator to be profitable?.

A big thank you to all of you for reading along, sending us emails, voting in the polls, joining the discussion in the comments, and sharing Electric Avenue with your network. We’re excited for what’s to come in the next 1.5 years!

Opportunity:

Due to our “years of service”, large network + nerd-level obsession with this space, we frequently come across opportunities to invest in promising e-mobility startups.

In fact, we currently already serve as investors and advisors to a number of companies and plan to expand this in the future, whenever we see a compelling startup.

Recently we’ve been thinking about sharing these opportunities with y’all by building an EV startup investor mailing list.

So if you:

  • are a keen believer in e-mobility and share our passion for EVs and charging ⚡️

  • love the idea of having exposure to promising EV startups in both Silicon Valley and across Europe 🚀

  • are comfortable making private company investments and have at least $25,000 / 25.000€ in patient capital to invest over the next few years 💰

Then complete this 1-minute survey and get in touch with us:

We’ll reach out to those interested over the coming weeks.

Have a good week friends,

Janek & Julius

It’s here! Tesla en-route forecasting is here!

Just 4 weeks ago we wrote about how far ahead Tesla’s vertically integrated EV driving, charging and navigation user experience is in ⚡ EV Trip Planning Masterclass 📖.

At the time we wrote:

Availability: Here we have the ultimate reinforcement loop: Tesla does not offer Android Auto or Apple Carply —> A lot of Tesla drivers use the native navigation system —> Tesla gets more data about things like their final destination —> Tesla can deliver a better routing experience —> more Tesla drivers use the native navigation system. This flywheel allows Tesla as the only OEM/CPO player today to actually make some-what accurate wait time predictions at its Supercharger stations, especially in the US.

Electric Avenue - Edition 2024-01-17

Now we see Tesla actually leveraging this advantage. With its 2024.2 Software update Tesla’s vehicle navigation system now

  • shows exactly how many other Tesla vehicles are navigating to the same Supercharger as you (see “3 cars en route” in the screenshot example above)

  • + predicts how many Supercharger stalls will be available when YOUR vehicle arrives at the station (see “41 stalls available on arrival” above”)

This is Tesla really flexing it’s muscles in terms of both it’s data advantage and it’s exceptional product velocity.

Of course, this caveat section from our last article still applies:

Tesla will face new challenges: With the opening of the Supercharger network to 3rd party vehicles Tesla will lose some of its data advantage. Non-Tesla vehicles will provide a lot less static and dynamic live data to Tesla. Tesla also has no way today to provide feedback like alternatives to crowded supercharger sites to 3rd party vehicles where it does not control the navigation experience. All of this could decrease the accuracy of predictions Tesla can make, even for customers that are still fully locked into its native ecosystem (Tesla vehicle, using Tesla Navigation, charging only at Tesla Superchargers).

Watch this space and stay tuned to Electric Avenue for more!

  • A CPO is born!⚡: It’s official! The 7 automaker joint venture for public fast charging in the US and Canada is up and running (see:⚡The Power Rangers conquering North America). The company will be based in Los Angeles and a CEO has been named. Additional a website has been launched, listing > 20 jobs across varying important positions for a charging network. (Link)

  • German Highway chargers awarded 🛣️: Germany has big plans for its public charging funding programDeutschlandnetz”. Now the German highway rest-stop operator has awarded its sites to 4 major charging network players. Note: These sites currently only have unsupervised toilets and no convenience stores or other amenities. (Link)

  • NIO launches MSP-filtered routing in Europe 💳: While Tesla is innovating through it’s highly integrated charging ecosystem, Chinese EV startup NIO is innovating in 3rd party integrations. As of the latest update, NIO vehicles in Europe are now able to filter charging stops along routes by their preferred e-mobility service provider (eMSP). (Link)

Most-clicked link last week: was our featured startup FLEXeCharge and its load management platform for CPOs (Link)
