How to track CO2 emissions in EV charging?🔌

Have you ever asked yourself if the electricity used to charge your electric vehicle is actually green?

After all, everyone knows that Electric cars are only as clean as the power supply used for charging them.

REVEAL CO2 - A new project from the Technical University of Munich’s UnternehmerTUM - wants to address the challenge of accurately assessing CO2 emissions from electric vehicles (EVs).

How are CO2 emissions tracked today? 🧮

Tracing charging emissions is a difficult game for those who are legally obliged to do so to capture their CO2 footprint (e.g. all Auto OEMs and many fleet managers thanks to the CSRD).

While it's honorable that lots of charging networks supposedly supply 100% green electricity, proof for that doesn't go much further than glossy claims on their websites. Which auditor will accept such proof? You guessed it - none.

What information would be needed to help those poor fleet managers to find some peace of mind? They simply need proof of the electricity contract that supplies a charge point. Sounds simple, right?

What is REVEAL CO2’s goal? 🎯

The project’s proposed solution is a digital platform to exchange auditable emissions data between all stakeholders along the EV charging value chain, including auto OEMs, fleet operators, grid operators, and Charging Point Operators (CPOs).

On such a platform, CPOs could easily share proof of procuring 100% green electricity. Those in need of emission data (aka OEMs and fleet operators) could even carry some of the cost spent on buying green electricity. Ultimately, if everyone chips in along the value chain, money could actually be spent on the build-out of renewables.

Project Ask to our Readers🙋‍♀️

The project team is looking for Charge Point Operators who are willing to discuss and provide feedback on the proposed initiative.

Electric Avenue Investor Opportunity Update 🗝️

Hey EVeryone, Janek and Julius here. We've received a lot of replies to the Investor Survey over the past few weeks. We're very excited about your interest in EV&Charging startup investment opportunities!

On the other side, we also have a handful of exciting e-mobility startups in the pipeline that have voiced interest in having the expert readership of Electric Avenue on their cap table. After laying the groundwork in the past couple of weeks, we’re now happy to announce:

Introducing: The Electric Avenue Investor Syndicate⚡

An angel investment network built from the community of readers of Electric Avenue.

Within the network, we will share companies that we believe are game-changers from a technical and/or business model perspective. Together, we will back impact-driven founders in the EV charging and broader e-mobility space. We expect to invest in a handful of deals per year, sourced either through our existing network or you - the readers!

The Team

How will this change Electric Avenue?

It won’t! Our newsletter will continue to deliver weekly reporting on the EV industry as we have been for the last 1.5 years.

What’s next?

Great news - the first investment opportunity is LOCKED IN! 🎉

We secured an allocation in what is, in our humble opinion, an extremely high-caliber EU-based e-mobility startup. Here’s how you can get involved:

For Investors 💰

If you:

  • love the idea of having exposure to promising EV startups in both Silicon Valley and across Europe 🚀

  • are comfortable making private company investments and have at least $25,000 / 25.000€ in patient capital to invest over the next few years 💰

Then complete this 1-minute survey and we’ll be in touch:

For Startups 🚀

If you’re a startup in e-mobility and plan on fundraising soon, fill out this application and we’ll be in touch:

Thanks for your attention. And now, back to regular programming.

  • Commanding respect 🏋️: The folks at Chargebyte, a German manufacturer of controller boards for EV charging stations, seem to have made a breakthrough. The company announced that it’s engineering team discovered Charge Norris - a powerful AI that has the potential to revolutionize EV charging. Chargebyte claims that “When Charge Norris optimizes a charging station, the electrons line up to fill batteries faster out of sheer respect.” (Link)

  • Fisker Payment Transaction Chaos 🤪💸: Lately, the flood of bad news is not breaking off for Fisker. An article by TechCrunch about Fisker ($FSR) losing track of millions of dollars in customer payments symbolizes why the company has been stumbling and ultimately got delisted from the NY Stock Exchange (NYSE). The article reports that due to a of lax internal procedures, the company couldn’t keep track of payment transactions (even delivering vehicles without collecting any form of payment) and couldn’t accurately say how much revenue it generated. Ouch.

  • Polestar Charge integrates Tesla Superchargers 🔌: Through its collaboration partner Plugsurfing, Polestar becomes the first OEM charging service (eMSP) in Europe to integrate the Tesla Supercharging Network. Optionally, Polestar drivers can subscribe to a monthly plan (13,99 €/ month) which grants a 30% price reduction at selected networks (5 CPOs - 28k chargepoints) incl. Tesla. The discount is given on the regular CPO-based price visible in the App. According to Plugsurfing’s FAQ article, the integration currently still requires Polestar drivers to download the Tesla app and enter their Polestar/Plugsurfing card number manually.

Most-clicked link last week: was the State of Charge interview with Ford CEO Jim Farley on his decision to transition to Tesla’s NACS connector (Link).

Meme of the Week 🤡

Ever tried to find out what the Enterprise plan for a Charging Station Management System costs?

🤣🤣🤣

That's a wrap for this week! Let us know how you feel and leave some feedback (We read every single one of these 🙂 ):
