Finding the Sweet Spot: Utilization vs. Wait Time 🔌

Last week, Tesla shared an interesting graph (link) about their Supercharging network utilization. The graph (see below) shows the average “Sessions per Stall per Day” (=SSD) and the % of waiters from 2019 up until 2025.

While utilization has been steadily increasing from 3 to 8 sessions per stall per day, the percentage of waiters has reduced from 4% to about 1%.

Additionally, Max de Zegher (Director Supercharging) shared current numbers across regions (link) - North America: 10 SSD / Europe: 7 SSD / APAC (excl. China): 5.3 SSD.

💭Quick Thoughts:

  1. Revenue Growth per Stall 💰: As battery capacities and peak-charge rates increased during the years, each charging session delivered more kWh in less time. More SSD × more kWh/session = a clear uptick in per-charge point revenue.

  2. Precision Network Planning 📍: Nailing the right balance of expansions (and occasional decommissions) is mission-critical for Charge Point Operators (CPOs). Overcrowding hurts customer satisfaction—too few stalls leads to frustration; too many stalls leaves assets idle. Tesla’s data-driven approach shows how careful siting and sizing can keep utilization high without driving wait times sky-high.

  3. Managing Peak-Season Queues 📱: Even the best-planned networks hit seasonal peaks—think summer road trips or holidays—where brief queues are inevitable. Tesla is piloting virtual queuing as a new feature under beta, to smooth out those spikes and reduce frustrated waiters (link).

  • Monta ranks Europe’s top EV chargers 🥇: Siemens’ SiCharge CC AC22 leads AC models, while Kempower’s C-Series conquers the first place in DC charger ranking leading before Alpitronic (4 models in the top 10). (link)

  • A new king of charging speed on the horizon 👀: Mercedes-AMG unveiled the electric CONCEPT AMG GT XX which debuts a Formula 1 derived high-voltage battery that supports over 850 kW charging power at up to 1,000 amps, enabling a theoretical recovery of up to 400 km (WLTP) of range in around five minutes. These provisional figures have been tested with an Alpitronic DC charger that features Phoenix Contact’s newest CCS2 cable that supports up to 800A continuous and up to 1000A for temporary “boost” mode (thermal dependent)(link).

  • How depot electrification creates energy sovereignty ⚡️: Casper Norden from Decade Energy wrote an interesting articel about depot electrification for truck fleets. Core message is that electrifying vehicle depots is not just about cutting emissions but a strategic necessity to bolster Europe’s energy sovereignty, enhance competitiveness and lower transport and energy costs (link).

Most-clicked link last week: Was the link to a great XPENG video ad shared by our buddy Felix:
