⚡️ 2025 EV Expectations: What’s Charging Up the Industry Next? 💡🔮

As we look ahead to 2025, we sat down and wrote down our key expectation on trends in the electric vehicle industry. Let us know you thoughts in the comments. ✍️

🇺🇸 United States

  1. Concerns over potential subsidy reductions under the incoming Trump administration drive a surge in EV sales and investments in charging infrastructure to secure subsidies and public funding.

  2. We expect rapid growth in public DC fast charging infrastructure from players like IONNA, GM Energy, and Tesla.

  3. We expect an increased availability of NACS cables at CPO networks, along with more manufacturers introducing vehicle models with native NACS support.

🇪🇺 Europe

  1. EV sales numbers will pick-up because of tightened CO2 emission targets and continuous decrease in battery costs enabling cost parity to ICE vehicles and more affordable EV models available in the market.

  2. We expext an increasing attention on ad-hoc pricing for public charging infrastructure. On-site at location greater transparency is created through more prominent price displays (e.g. totems). Comparability will also be driven by the implementation of the AFIR regulation, which comes into force on 14 April and requires free public data sharing of location and pricing data.

  3. Convenience for EV drivers at public DC fast charging points will increase as the number of larger sites with amenities and shops increases.

❌ What we don’t expect

  1. We do not expect a breakthrough in vehicle-to-grid regulatory standards that would enable mass deployment. Instead, grid operators and governments are likely to continue to focus on large-scale battery energy storage systems, which are currently perceived as more controllable and preferred to provide flexibility in the energy system to integrate more renewable energy sources.

  2. Chinese EV brands such as BYD, NIO and Zeekr are unlikely to gain significant market share in the short term. Establishing a recognised and trusted brand will take time before consumers and leasing companies adopt these EVs. Meanwhile, traditional european brands controlled by Chinese companies, such as Volvo and MG, are expected to continue their sales growth with attractive models in the volume segment.

  • VW gets Tesla Supercharger Access in June / July 2025 🔌 : In an interview with PC Mag at CES, VW director of public relations announced VW’s launch timeline. VW is one of the last OEMs to receive access through an adapter, however the interview didn’t confirm if acccess for VW’s brands Audi and Porsche.

  • Xiaomi extends its accessible charging network in China ⚡️ : Xiaomi has partnered with NIO (excluding battery swap stations), XPeng, and Li Auto, granting its electric vehicle (EV) customers access to over 29,000 charging stations across China. Through the partnership Xiaomi user can see the dynamic availability status of the charging stations and initiate charging session via the Xiami app. Despite being a late entrant to the chinese EV market, Xiaomi's EV business surpassed its initial delivery goal of 100,000 units ahead of schedule.
