EV (Startup) Funding News 📈

It's time for our first funding news of the year! 🚀 Let’s take a look at which EV startups kicked off 2025 with fresh funding and which companies have exited the market 💰🔋:

New Funding

  • Easelink, an Austrian company developing a conductive charging system, has secured €11.5M in funding from the European Innovation Council to drive the standardisation of automated EV charging.

  • Gridio secures €2.4 million for their smart charging app.

  • New York based Flipturn secured a $11M Series A for their CPMS and fleet management platform.

  • ENAPI received €7,5M to grow their roaming platform in order to commodize connectivity between CPOs and EMPs. More on ENAPI in the link section!

  • Pleevi secured €1M to develop their AI-based smart charging software that optimizes energy use with real-time data and forecasts for greener and more cost-efficient charging sessions.

  • US-based Presto has raised $15M in seed funding to simplify public charging for fleets to seamlessly find, charge and pay across multiple CPOs.

  • WeaveGrid has secured $28M in funding to enable utilities to find EV drivers, gain insights into charging patterns, enroll EVs in incentive programs, encourage beneficial charging habits and actively manage charging. Following the initial investment from Woven Capital (Toyota), Hyundai and Kia joined in January with a strategic investment of an undisclosed amount.

Exits

  • Accurant International, through its subsidiary FlexEnergi, acquired US-based FlexCharging. FlexCharging allows utilities and drivers to optimize EV charging based on grid congestion, renewable energy availability and electricity pricing.

  • Berlin-based EV charging startup Jucr, known for its subscription-based charging model, has filed for insolvency after raising over €30 million in funding.

DC Fast Charger Error Rates 🚨

Reliability in public EV charging is a top priority for both drivers and industry experts. Yet, getting a complete end-to-end view—spanning the charger, charge point management system (CPMS), roaming hubs, and EMPs / payment terminals—is rare. As a result, the industry lacks transparency and meaningful benchmarks.

Right now, we largely depend on companies that publish their own data to compare the reliability and quality of different charging solutions. That’s why we make it a priority to analyze and share insights whenever such data becomes available—like in our recent post, where Kempower lifted the curtain on charging success rates and uptime. 🔎

Recently, Monta CEO Casper Rasmussen shared an update on DC charger error rates based on real-world data. Monta, as a CPMS provider, has broad perspective on different charging hardware and user interactions—especially when drivers use their app to start a session. Here are the facts from their data (20k sessions Feb vs. Jan 2025) 📊

🥇 Kempower7.2% (3% error, 4.2% 0kWh) ⬆️ Improved by 2.2%
🥈 Alpitronic9.5% (6.9% error, 2.6% 0kWh) ⬆️ Improved by 4.8%
🥉 ABB13% (9.8% error, 3.2% 0kWh) ⬆️ Improved by 1.8%
4️⃣ Siemens13.9% (10.6% error, 3.3% 0kWh) No change

🔍 Note on 0 kWh: Error rates include failed charging attempts resulting in 0 kWh delivered, which is a problem in itself!

What Affects Charger Performance? ⚙️

These error rates are influenced by multiple factors, including:

  • Charging station hardware & firmware quality

  • Integration with CPMS providers like Monta via OCPP

  • The EV driver’s interaction with the charger

While error rates are just one of many factors in assessing charger performance, tracking and sharing this data helps improve charging quality across the industry. Monta’s transparency is a step in the right direction, driving higher reliability for EV drivers.

🚗💡 What’s your experience with these brands? Let us know your thoughts in a review.

  • The necessary evil of roaming platforms 🛜: Enapi is challenging established raoming hubs like Hubject, Gireve, and e-clearing, reshaping the EV industry with a fresh approach. Their founder and CEO Jakob wrote a four-part blog series and dives deep on Enapi’s principles - focus on neutrality, true platform empowerment, long-term value creation over lock-in effects, Size of the Pie > Slice of the Pie. Grab a glass of your favorite drink and read it here.

  • Specs of the Tesla V4 cabinets 👀: In a post on X, the Tesla V4 specifications have been shared giving us insights on their efficiency (>96%), max distance between the cabinet and dispenser (100 m / 340 ft), DC post output (up to 1000 Volt and up to 615 A) and much more.

  • First MCS Charger at Milence 🔌 : Milence deployed its first two megawatt chargers (1,440 kW with up to 1,500 A, 1,000 V) at the port of Antwerp-Bruges. MCS technology enables significantly faster charging times than CCS, reducing the turnaround time for (long-haul) electric trucks to maximise vehicle utilisation. EU funding from the AFIF programme, which we highlighted in our recent post, is supporting Milence in the deployment of 284 MCS charging points across Europe with more than €111 million.

Reader Review of the Week

Selected ⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️ Freakin’ awesome on ⚡️ How Tesla wants to solve queuing for Superchargers 🔀 and wrote:

“any chance the newsletter will add an interesting charger location or station call out for unusually interesting charger technologies or stations?” → YES we will definitely!

Here is a nice picture from the recent Out of Spec trip to South Korea. The station, located on a motorway in South Korea, has an LED display that shows the charging status of the vehicles being charged.

That's a wrap for this week! Let us know how you feel and leave some feedback (We read every single one of these 🙂 ):
